Synchronous Double Primary Exophageal Cancers of Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Adenocarcinoma

Abstract

|
65 year old man with simultaneously occurring squamous cell carcinoma of
mid-esophagus and adenocarcinoma of distal esophagus is reported. There was no continuity
between the two masses. Bone scan revealed hot sopts in right 3rd, 4th, 5fth, and 6th ribs.
Both esophageal lesions were responded to treatment with 5-fluorourcil and cisplatin.
Fourteen months after the start of treatment, spinal metastasis was developed, but
histologically not confirmed. Follow-up esophagoscopic findings at that time revealed 2 cm
sized ulcerative lesion in the distal esophagus only. In this report, we discussed the
pathogenesis and treatment of double primary cancers.
